Join us for the Horowhenua Taste Trail, Saturday 24 November 10am - 4pm. The Taste Trail is a unique experience where producers open their doors and provide you with an opportunity to experience the paddock to plate journey, see how your food is produced and then enjoy it directly at the source.
Horowhenua has a variety of passionate producers. At each stop on the Trail you will be taken through an experience which showcases the produce, from factory tours to gourmet food offerings, and tastings to farm tours. The 10 producers on the Trail create and produce a variety of excellent food and produce, and include: Woodhaven Gardens, Lewis Farms, Genoese Pesto, Turk’s, Woody’s Free Range Farm, Levin Eel Trading, Thoroughbread Foods, The Ultimate Egg, The Baked Dane, and the Bagrie Dairy Farm.

The 2018 Taste Trail
Turk's Turk's will be offering guided tours of their chicken processing plant on demand. Enjoy Yatai’s pop-up Japanese Restaurant. There will be a variety of Turks products for you to try and buy including the new range of award winning butterfly chicken. For the kids; live dayold chicks will be on display, along with a colouring in competition. Enjoy the grand finale Savour Event with a beer and burger and local tunes.
Lewis Farms The Asparagus packhouse will be live in action as asparagus is graded and packed. You will also learn about the hydroponic strawberry operation and hear of the challenges of growing without soil. The Ocean Beach Eatery team will be serving up a selection of asparagus inspired treats for you to try in their popup cafe and garden bar. Enjoy a real fruit ice-cream before you head to your next stop. Kick start your Taste Trail day off in style with a champagne breakfast at Lewis Farms.
Bagrie Dariy Farm + The Baked Dane Enjoy a tour of the modern rotary milking facility and see cows being milked. Animals to pet, including cute calves, ponies and sheep, as well as a variety of trucks, tractors, and agricultural equipment on display. Enjoy treats prepared by Artisan Kitchen. Taste and then purchase some delicious cheese from the Kapiti Cheese range. With facepainting, barrel train, and a bouncy castle, this site is a must stop for kids. Sign up for the Masterclass Savour Event with Jude Messenger to learn more about cooking with dairy products. At The Baked Dane’s tent meet Lisa Brink, who recently quit her day job and is now pursuing her foodie dream. The Baked Dane will be showcasing their specialty range of crackers, including Knækbrød, with an original and a gluten free version that both pair beautifully with cheese, meats and dips. Sample the crackers and stock up your market bag with some to take home.
The Ultimate Egg Take a tour of The Ultimate Egg Farm and processing plant and learn all about the egg production process. From where the chickens live, to laying, to how the eggs are collected and then packaged into their trays and shipped off, The Ultimate Egg site uses the latest technology. Hear from the SPCA about what chicken farms have to do to achieve the SPCA Blue Tick. Eggs available for sale.
Levin Eel Trading Levin Eel Trading is a family owned business which started in 1978, specialising in processing and exporting frozen eel throughout Asia and Europe. Levin Eel also export live eels straight to the markets in Asia, Europe and North America, and sell ready-to-eat smoked eel and other fresh eel products primarily for the domestic market.
Genoese Pesto + Thoroughbread Foods Come along and enjoy a walk through Genoese’s pesto factory, with an up close experience of pesto production. Sample and purchase the full range of pesto and dips, sample the new plant based pesto range, and indulge in food prepared by Capitol Restaurant. Keep your basil experience alive by purchasing a fresh plant so you can enjoy the aroma at home. Sign up for the Savour Event with celebrity chef Annabelle White. Hear the fascinating story of how Throughbread Foods has grown into an established leader in the gluten free baked goods market. Chat with the owner/operator, Rebecca Rolls, who recently won an award for her stunning product. There will be a range of samples of old favourites along with new products to try, and loaves for you to purchase and enjoy at home.
Woody's Free Range Farm Come along and check out Woody’s processing facility. There will be demonstrations throughout the day of how they make bacon, coppa and other cured meats. Walk through Woody’s history to date; sit back and enjoy Woody’s moment of fame on Country Calendar, and listen to some live music. Try Woody’s impressive range of specialty cured meats and sausages. There will be a full assortment of free range meat available for you to purchase and take home.
Woodhaven Gardens Woodhaven Gardens has something for everyone – from pack house tours to tractor rides. Fresh vegetables will be available for tasting and purchase, so you can stock up your market bag. Watson’s Gardens will have seedlings for sale. Watch the action of the cooking competition run with the support of the NZ Chef’s Association and Kiwi Kids Can Cook. Enjoy Cafe Royale’s pop-up cafe and garden bar, and try a range of dishes showcasing vegetables.
